New life in Paradise

The new story of my life takes place at the end of the world, in the Southern island, which is usually called as the World’s Paradise. Mauritius shows very interesting features of variety of animals and bird species in their varied and beautiful colours. Mauritius includes the mix of cultures, religions, languages and colours, taking breath away since you first step on its ground.

Colours of Paradise

Having lived in different parts of the world I find myself thinking that I cannot believe my eyes: the colours of the paradise are light, bright and shining. Having the eye of a painter and the soul of a poet I don’t think I could ever find the words to describe all the beauty of its splendid nature.

Glow-in-the-dark waves of Indian Ocean break on lava based cliffs with their grey stones shining in the sun. The strong wind of change is sweeping off the feet, leaving hundreds drops of sea water on the salty lips and wild hair.

Reflection on working as ULTRAHACK OS Facilitator

Ultrahack – part of SlushHacks – 2015 is an ultra long development runway with leading industry players, novel challenges and never-before-published API’s and tools Official site .

Working as Online System Facilitator Ultrahack OS  , Project coordinator, Production Assistant and Event Organiser I had the following responsibilities:

1. Coordinating contestants and partners;
2. Enhancing collaboration in the online environment;
3. Monitoring and fostering projects development;
4. Planning and implementing matchmaking sessions;
5. Providing online connection via GotoMeeting;
6. Suggesting ideas regarding Ultrahack OS development;

Outcomes:

a. Contestants:

1. scaffolded, better introduced with the main guidelines and rules
3. motivationally and emotionally supported
4. know how to coregulate group cognitive and metacognitive processes
5. encouraged to communicate with other experts, support each other and be responsible to other experts’ point of view

Self evaluation:

I have managed to reach expected results and there are visible results of the hard work done. I would be glad to continue to work with Ultrahack team searching for the new solutions for improvement and further development of Ultrahack. I have learnt a lot of new information, got more experience and skills in the new area for me, consolidate my master knowledge and practiced it in real life situations.

I find working experience in Ultrahack highly important for my future career plans as Ultrahack deals with the 21st century global and local challenges and it provides the solutions that could be solved by means of technology. Doing free lance type of work gives me the opportunity to plan my doctoral studies and to develop my personal study plan.

EXPERT PROFILE 5

1. Reflect and evaluate your path towards expertise during the LET programme on the basis of

Being interested in becoming an expert of learning, I decided to make the list of my expertise and define the main ones, that are:

  • Theory and methodology of teaching foreign languages and cultures

I have already had a linguistic and pedagogical background as I have graduated from Moscow State Regional University as a specialist of linguistics and theory and methodology of teaching foreign languages and cultures where I was taught all aspects of pedagogy and methodology: solving of didactic problems, planning and the construction of the lesson, ability to evaluate, teaching of reading, writing, speaking, grammar and listening, project-based and distant learning. The main purpose in our University was to develop communication skills in language and cultural competence. Moreover I had a lot of experience in the area of education by means of teaching the English language to children, making a lesson plan, developing training programs and using interactive games.

  • Intercultural communication

Intercultural communication was one of the major subjects in Moscow University, where we were taught the cultural differences and cultural competence. I also have international experience, as the International Center sent me to Germany several times, where I studied the German language and the culture of Germany. As the LET group consists of students from different countries and cultures, I have got more international experience and consolidated my cultural and communicational competences.

  • Learning and Education

The Master’s Degree Programme in Learning, Education and Technology (LET) educates experts in learning. The core of the education consists of three theoretical issues: self-regulated learning, collaborative learning, and the learning of expertise.

  • Educational use of ICT

As the LET Programme deals with a lot of educational technologies after completed Technology enhanced learning and ICT Workshop courses I have a good technological background on how to use technological tools in learning and education.

  • Student tutoring

I have participated in the tutor training offered by University of Oulu and tutored new International Master’s Degree students in the Masters’ Degree Programme Learning, Education and Technology during autumn term 2013. The purpose of tutoring is to provide information and support for new students about study environments and student life.

  • Academic writing

The University of Oulu see its aim to develop students’ academic writing skills, so that I possess a lot of theory on how to write academic texts. Moreover I have a good experience in writing academic articles working both individually and collaboratively and writing Master’s thesis.

ß self-regulation model (Zimmermann)

Self-regulation is an essential process of learning that assists students in managing their thoughts, behaviors and emotions in order to successfully regulate their learning. In self-regulation students are assumed to master such learning skills as goal setting, planning and motivating strategies, regulating emotion and attention, flexibly using learning strategies, being able to self-monitor, seeking help appropriately and being able to self-evaluate (Zumbrunn & Roberts, 2011). Self-regulated students are more engaged in their learning. Self´-regulation is considered as a complex process that requires students to regulate their cognitive and metacognitive learning processes.

Zimmerman’s self-regulation model reflects that self-regulation involves three cyclical phases: forethought, performance, and self-reflection (see Figure 1).

                                            Calibration

The forethought phase is a first planning stage, where the learner considers what goals and strategies need to be initiated, and how self-efficacy and self-motivation can be controlled in order to accomplish the task. I have learnt how to set goals and choose right strategies, and how to control motivation and emotions.

The performance phase involves self-control and self-observation, processes that are essential for continued doing a task. Doing a task, I useself-explanations about how and why do I need to use self-observations to self-control my learning. The challenge is how to act according to the plan when there are a lot of internal and external factors that can affect motivation and effort, but I do my best in order to succeed.

During the self-reflection phase, the learner makes self-judgments and self-reactions on their performance. In this phase I evaluate the quality of the work done and the learning result (the learning achievements) and identifies the gaps in my knowledge. It helps to reconsider the forethougрt/planning phase. Theoretical knowledge does not bring expected results without constant training and vast experience. I cannot call myself as an expert of self-regulated learning, but I am on a right way and the more I practise the higher results are achieved.

ß knowledge construction

I understand knowledge construction as an active process of structuring separate knowledge into complete clusters. It reminds me a theory of the planet Earth’s genesis that assumes that the Earth appears by means of stardust that was attracted by a strong gravitation. In our case, the separate knowledge is stardust and if a person can manage to combine the separate knowledge together or construct it, he or she is going to possess expert knowledge that forms knowledge construction. The gravitation is associated with such factors as possessing strong motivation, metacognitive and self-regulation skills.

Knowledge construction is the core element of constructivism theory that emphasizes the importance of the knowledge, beliefs, and skills an individual brings to learning experience. It represents the construction of new understanding as a combination of prior learning, new information and ability to learn.

Now I would like to reflect how I managed to develop my expertise through knowledge construction. Previously, I have just learn a certain subject by evaluating my current knowledge and what particular area is needed to be learnt. I tried to control my motivation but I have never before thought that I could regulate the way the new knowledge can be processed and constructed in my head. During the studying in LET programme I learnt how to self-regulate my learning: plan, monitor, control and evaluate through reflecting the learning process that brings a new understanding of knowledge construction. The Expert course has taught me how a big amount of knowledge can be processed and remembered by means of dividing it into main groups and identifying the relations. I have spend a lot of time to consider how the existing knowledge can be systematized and divided it into expertise and metacognitive processes about domain specific knowledge. It helps me to use fast existing knowledge when it is needed and on the other hand to remember a big amount of information in a short time.

ß expert performance

Experts are expected to have and use proficiently expert performance skills that contributes with both self-performance and work-related performance. Expert performance is triggered by self-regulation, metacognition, self-beliefs and self-efficacy.But having all this skills is not enough as person needs to have a skill of reflecting his or her ideas or thoughts and have an ability to express and argument these ideas, distinguishing core ones.

During my studying in LET Programme I have come a long path in developing my expert performance skills. Started with cognitively performing difficult tasks such as writing essays and reading difficult articles, writing reflections in my blog I started to use metacognitive knowledge and skills being aware in setting goals and choosing strategies by asking draw questions to myself (Why do I need to do this task? What are my goals? How can I use and reflect my knowledge?). In order to write a good reflection, I had to research basic theoretical framework, connect new knowledge with existing one, to define core ideas that need to be reflected and discussed and after that it was time to consider what is the best way how the result can be performed. Work-related performance is going to be evaluated by experts who master this area, but who have no idea if and how I managed to learn learning material, that is why it is important to pay attention to performance itself. Performing assignments in blog was easier to me, as I had time to systemize my ideas, identify connections between concepts and structure my response while performing in public was one of my weaknesses because of a fear of public speaking. But the experience of augmenting my idea and thought in a written form through technological tool has brought more self-confidence to me.

I think concept “expert”  presumes having expert performance skills. I see expert performance as deep engagement in learning, applying motivation, choosing strong strategies and ability  to express and share one’s knowledge.

ß collaboration

I possess the basic knowledge of collaborative learning and know the main aspects how to achieve good collaboration.The research proves collaborative learning is more effective in achieving high learning results than individuals working alone (Järvelä, Hurme & Järvenoja, 2011). In spite of the fact that collaborative learning has become an important instructional intervention that is expected to lead to positive results, to achieve successful collaboration is still a big challenge. In order to be successful, learners must participate in the construction of joint cognitive products that require shared understanding. Collaboration is seen as a challenging process that requires not only responsibility and creativity but cognitive, metacognitive, motivational and socio-emotional skills. As the core element of collaboration is getting shared understanding that could be reached by means of active and focused social interactions, it requires socially shared cognition and metacognition. As we see, collaboration itself cannot be neither efficient or inefficient. According to Dillenbourg and Baker (1995) collaboration works under some conditions: the composition of group, the features of the task, the context of collaboration and the medium available for communication. Besides the essential requirements to the task the role of the difficulty level should be underlined. Collaboration never takes place when all of the group members know how to solve a problem themselves. To provoke active interactions task should make students not only use their own knowledge and skills but identify a problem and chose a right strategy how to solve it working together with the whole group. Research provides the evidence that collaborative learning is more effective in more complex learning environments (Dillenbourg, Järvelä & Fisher, 2009). Speaking about collaborative learning it is necessary to mention the role of teachers. A successful collaboration is not complete without certain planning or education. Teachers have to do more than establishing groups and telling them to study together. To provide collaborative learning and expecting students to achieve socially shared metacognition in problem-solving teachers need to take the following roles: educational, social, administrative and technical roles. In other words the main role of the teacher is to provide appropriate scaffolding paying attention to the students who face difficulties while working in a group.

First collaboration seemed challenging to me as each group member has his or her own expectations and preferences, own learning style and at the first time there is some barrier that is needed to overcome in order to achieve shared understanding. As collaborative learning allows to get more knowledge through problem solving and working with other experts I have managed to fulfill my expertise and find new perspectives and approaches in mastering learning area.

2. Reflect the role of interest, motivation and engagement in your studies

In this point I am going to reflect the role of interest, motivation and engagement in my studies, that are the important factors achievement of high learning results depend on. I think the question gives a good direction for knowledge construction, as the concepts are in the direct order. It seems obvious that motivation is triggered by interest while engagement is triggered by motivation of students. But at the same time both interest and motivation can vary because of the level of engagement into studies. That means that all of the concept “ interest”, ”motivation”, ”engagement” equally depends on each other.

Previously, I found myself high-motivated person who is always eager to cope with difficulties on the way of mastering a new learning field. But this issue was connected mostly with interest than motivation, as I was interested in self-development and acquisition of a new knowledge. When I met difficulties I tried to control and regulate the level of the interest. On the one hand regulation of interest is close to motivation in its meaning, but now I realize that it is impossible to control motivation without mastering and understanding motivation theory.

During my studies in LET programme I have gained a strong theoretical competence of self-regulating, metacognition and motivation. On the one hand motivation can be included in SRL theoretical framework as motivated students regulates cognitive and meta-cognitive learning processes that leads to achieving high results and provides positive emotions, and vice versa when a student has a low motivation, he or she is expected to give up doing the task that brings negative emotions and a lack of self-belief that leads to loss of interest. Students who are motivated to learn, are more likely to invest the necessary time and energy needed to learn and apply appropriate SRL skills. In order to determine the role of motivational beliefs in self-regulated learning the researchers are considering the role of the three general types of motivational beliefs: self-efficacy beliefs (judgments of one’s capabilities to do the academic task), task value beliefs (beliefs about the importance of, interest in, and value of the task), and goal orientations (whether the focus is on mastery and learning of the task, grades or extrinsic reasons for doing the task, or relative ability in relation to social comparisons with other students).

Self-regulated learning is a key competence for lifelong learning. Three areas where students can benefit from self-regulated learning: academic performance, motivation to learn, learning strategies. From here we see that motivation can be a separate concept. The term motivation is derived from the Latin verb movere, which means to move. In other words, motivational theories attempt to answer questions about what gets individuals moving (energization) and toward what activities or tasks.

Having learnt the theoretical framework I have been working hard by applying motivational strategies and I have learnt how motivation can be controlled as a result that affected engagement into my studies.

Engagement in learning is difficult to be achieved, as learning is complex process that requires self-regulation skills. The more self-regulated the person is the more he or she is engaged. Motivation is a strong factor but if there is interest plus strong motivation person is going to achieve high results. As for me I learnt how to control interest, motivation and engagement so that I can perform any task till the end and master new skills even if I do not have innate talent.

3. Reflect and ponder what kind of effect the LET programme brings to your future, and work

life, when considering you as an expert in learning and educational technology.

The Programme of learning, Education and Technologies give students a good chance to practice the new knowledge and skills. By means of successful completion of the following courses I get a good experience on how the theoretical knowledge can be applied in practice:

TEL (Technology-Enhanced Learning)

Having the opportunity to design a real course we were taught the whole processes of idea development, writing pedagogical and technological scripts and developing of the whole learning formal and informal environment.

Educational projects

I was introduced to the new working area that is running educational projects. I have learnt the best ways of complying with the client’s requirements and ability to lead the project from its beginning to the very end with a little use of scaffolding given from experts. As the project topic was distance learning, I managed to fulfil my expertise in this particular field.

Student tutoring

I managed to benefit the following experience from working as a student tutor at the University of Oulu:

  • Professional development

I have already had a linguistic and pedagogical background but I have never been working to students that is why I gained a new working experience.

  • International communication

As the group consisted of students from different countries and cultures, I got international experience and consolidated my cultural and communicational competences.

  • Perfect collaboration

Active group is the main task of each experienced student tutor. It can be reached by means of student-tutor, tutor-tutor and tutor-teacher collaboration. Being a student tutor I have applied a lot of effort to show a perfect example of collaboration and cooperation.

  • Mentoring

I have experienced myself as a mentor to the new LET students, finding the main goal to foster students’ adaptation in the International Master’s Programme of Learning, Education and Technology and to provide students with an appropriate scaffolding on how to take maximum advantage from learning by means of fostering students’ own individual style of learning, showing students how the theoretical knowledge can be adopted into practice, activating students’ thinking and providing them with a deeper understanding of mentoring process and enhancing motivation.

TEL 2 (Designing technology-enhanced learning in global school systems)

The course presumes students to achieve the following learning outcomes:

  • recognise the needs, problems, situations and practices of pedagogical use of technologies in school systems worldwide and find research-based solutions for the shortcomings
  • examine future trends of technology enhanced learning
  • determine current problems, situations and practices of technology enhanced learning in a global context
  • analyse the concept of technology-enhanced learning

I find this course an important practice of what I have learnt during the two years at University of Oulu as it gave me an opportunity to define problems in learning contexts and search for appropriate solutions. The topic of the problem our group was working with was multiculturalism in Icelandic schools so that I had an opportunity to learn about multiculturalism and 21st century skills in nowadays world. I am going to use this knowledge in my work, as it is essential aspects expert needs to master.

The programme of Learning, Education and Technology has given to me a lot of support and helped to change the way of thinking. Have been learnt how to self-regulate my learning, control emotions and raise self-esteem, I have become more confident in my abilities and started to believe in myself. I have learnt to set higher goals and consider the wider range of perspectives that can be given to me. By means of collaborating with groupmates and teachers I have learnt how to communicate with people of different categories not being scared to present my point of view. I have known what helps me to foster cognitive and metacognitive learning processes, how to motivate and sometimes punish myself, what life and learning models suit me and what qualities are need to continue working on. For the last two years I have made a big step forward, have developed my expertise and learnt how to apply and share my knowledge. I have achieved huge results if to compare with the beginning of my studying at the University of Oulu. Studying at the University of Oulu has given me an opportunity to work with serious, purposeful, well-read and experienced people who have shown a good example how to succeed in learning.

NAPLes studies. Shared regulation in CSCL by Sanna Järvelä

I have managed to participate in one more webinar arranged by the Network of Academic Programs in the Learning Sciences (NAPLeS) that is a network of Ph.D. and master‘s programs in the Learning Sciences. The topic of the Webinar was shared regulation in Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning by Sanna Järvelä who is a professor in Learning and Educational Technology Research Unit (LET), Department of Educational Sciences and Teacher Education, University of Oulu, Finland.

Being a part of LET, I have already had an opportunity to listen to lectures given by Sanna Järvelä in University of Oulu. From those lectures I gained theoretical and some practical knowledge about collaborative and computer-supported collaborative learning.

As the topic of my Master’s Thesis is “Enhancing collaborative learning by means of collaborative serious games” where I combine the theories of Digital Game-Based Learning and Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning in order to define collaborative serious games, their role in teaching-learning process and requirements to design of such games I was interested in participating in current Webinar.

First of all I would like to reflect my admiration with the learning environment that is Flashmeeting developed and hosted by the Open University UK. It allows for up to 30 participants and the 24 universities will each have one “seat” reserved for them in every session initially. The tool allows to record the webinars, it has  lot of functions such as sharing documents, video, audio, chat that help to promote collaboration between participants. On the other hand it was pleasant to see a lot of international students from different countries and there were especially many students from the Educational Department, University of Oulu.

As the main requirement to participation in NAPLES Webinar is to read a basic text before the joining the online meeting, I have read the following article- Järvelä, S. & Hadwin, A. (2013). New Frontiers: Regulating learning in CSCL. Educational Psychologist, 48(1), 25-39.

There is some research that proves that CSCL technologies promotes interactions and knowledge construction among students (Järvelä & Hadwin, 2013). Collaborative learning requires social interactions (Roschele & Tisley, 1995) while according to Koschman (1996) productive social interactions can be produced by carefully designed CSCL environmens.

There is an intensive research in CSCL over the last decade but there is a scientific gap in researching how groups or individuals regulate collaborative processes (Järvelä & Hadwin, 2013) that is why the current article is aimed to examine the role of regulatory processes in CL and investigate how CSCL environments can foster regulation of learning.

First the role of regulatory processes in learning is established. In collaborative learning students’ productive engagement depends on groups’ coordinating engagement in the shared task (Järvelä & Hadwin, 2013). As coordination is a challenging process that involves self-regulated agents with differet goals, strategies, cognitions and emotions.

The article argues that achieving success in CSCL depends on the following types of regulation (Järvelä & Hadwin, 2013):

a. self-regulation- self-regulatory skills and strategies individuals bring to the group.

In self-regulation participants adopt, develop, choose strategies, monitor, evaluate, set goals, plan and adopt and change belief processes that means successful teamwork depends on regulation of cognitive processes by each member of the group. Self-regulation occurs in collaboration with the respect to the three main questions:

1) Whose goals?

2) Who regulates?

3) What is regulated?

b. co-regulation– transitional support provided to one another to facilitate self-regulatory competence within a group. Collaboration requires individuals to actively monitor and regulate each other through questioning, prompting and restarting.

c. socially-shared regulation of learning– shared or collective regulation of learning (metacognitive awareness, shared motivation regulation and successful coordination of strategies). Goals and standards are cocontructed, regulation is distributed and shared with multiple ideas and perspectives re negotiated till consensus is met.

Reading the article has helped me to distinguish the differences between regulated-learning and knowledge coconstruction that are cornerstones of successful collaborative learning. While regulated-learning covers sociocognitive and team related aspects, knowledge coconstruction  refers to domain-specific  and task-related aspects (Järvelä & Hadwin, 2013).

The article provides with two strands of seemingly diverse research that is a foundation for supporting and researching CSCL that are:

a) computer-based pedagogical tools (CBPT) used to successfully support regulation in individual learning contexts can be leveraged for collaborative tasks contexts;

CBPT usually provide the following types of scaffolding

  • conceptual one includes hints and prompts to guide what knowledge to consider during problem-solving and understanding complex problems;
  • procedural provides knowledge how to use resources or perform a task;
  • metacognitive includes agents with specific task-related tasks in order to make them learn self-regulated processes;
  • strategic make students aware of different techniques for solving problems.

b) computer-based pedagogical tools (CBPT) for supporting collaborative knowledge construction can be leveraged for supporting regulatory processes.

Secondly the article includes the description of the research which aim is to demonstrate how regulation can be supported and researched in CSCL environments. Results of the research show that students can be supported to develop shared regulation. Moreover both individuals and groups need to use regulatory processes and strategies.

During the webinar professor Sanna Järvelä was drawing attention to the following issues:

1. Challenges for 21st century learning that are:

collective thinking instead of individual, active interaction, multiple expertise, stress because of information overload and week learning strategies;

  1. What is SRL, coRL and SSRL?

I liked the following definition of Self-Regulated learning: SRL is a process of learning to monitor, evaluate and regulate your own learning and thinking, motivation and emotion and behavior.  

It was useful to know new definitions and consolidate my knowledge in the particular field. In my opinion the current definition reflects the process of learning in a best way and at the same time explain its relation with other concepts such as motivation, emotion and behavior.

3. Research on how regulation can be supported and researched in CSCL environments;

4. Implications to CSCL for both teachers and educational technology designers.

During the Webinar participants were asked to collaboratively brainstorm to answer some questions and by means of that to experience CSCL in action. One of those questions were to provide ideas for further implications to CSCL.

Finally professor Sanna Järvela told about a project taking place in Oulu, Finland. BIKO is a reseach based development project aiming to renew the school and to understand what kind of school promotes inspired and skillful learners. UBIKO consists of 110 4th and 5th graders (age 10-11) working with their teachers in a designated unit of Oulu University Teacher Training School (OUTTS) and it is mainly funded by The Finnish National Board of Education (FNBE) (ubiko.eu). One of the benefits is providing physical environment to teachers and pupils supporting SRL and SSRL as it inspires both emotionally and motivationally.

After the lecture participants were provided with the opportunity to ask questions. My question was what role the teacher or instructor need to perform in order to facilitate successful CCSL. Should the teacher regulate motivation, emotions or behavior of the group or the group need to do that itself on both levels: individual and social? As I understand the teacher needs to take a role of a facilitator and provide appropriate scaffolding instead of taking responsibility under individual and social regulation in a group.

The current post is a reflection on the Webinar given by Marcia Linn on Wednesday, April 30th. The topic was Inquiry Learning. And some material to read in advance was suggested to the participants.

The article Computer-Guided Inquiry to Improve Science Learning by Linn et al. (2014) is based on the processes students perform in requiry (initiating investigations, gathering data, critiquing guidance, making drawings and writing essays to explain complex phenomena and etc.) and how these processes can be enhanced by using technological tools a good example of which is Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).

According to Linn et al. (2014) using computer technology allows teachers to overcome difficulties with their time and efforts, review the automated scores, to assign guidance to every student. And at the same time it provides students with immediate, personalized computer-generated  guidance (Linn et al., 2014).

It was interesting to know that in order to provide automated guidance a lot of work needs to be done by teachers and instructors. To keep students on the right track teachers monitor students’ progress and regularly add hints while researchers analyse students’ essays or drawings and elaborate alternative approaches (Linn et al., 2014). I think that nowadays technology can help to enhance learning and achieve high results and expected outcomes. The research shows that automated guidance was as effective as guidance provided by teacher but here I meet the question. Are the opportunities technological tools can provide enough to satisfy teachers and students’ needs? Teachers still need to do a huge amount of work in order to control if students are getting correct information and true knowledge as technological tools always can do mistake. In my opinion it would become a good solution if IT developers will be able to develop self-learning and self-developing educational tools that could be renewed by means of accumulation of information and consider modern trends and approaches, for example 21st century skills.

The article by Linn et al. (2014) also ponders the following examples of tools that help to promote inquiry:

  • Web-Based Inquiry Science Environment provides the students with effective guidance.
  • WISE  is a powerful online platform for designing, developing, and implementing science inquiry activities. This environment can score student essays or drawings and automatically assign guidance design to help students develop their explanations. http://wise.berkeley.edu/pages/features.html
  • Educational Testing Service (ETC) “c-rater” tool can develop an automated scoring system by means of using human-rated responses. Then WISE use these scores to provide personal guidance.
  • Writing Pal analyzes writing quality and provides strategies to strengthen the essay instead of identifying mistakes.
  • Auto Tutor prompts students to explain their reasoning how physics problem can be solved through writing dialogue with a computer avatar by analyzing students’ explanations and asking questions that help to improve physics problem-solving.
  • Betty’s Brain also provides guidance to students so that they can construct more accurate concept maps.

One of the main conclusions here is automated guidance allows teachers to concentrate on students (Linn et al., 2014). The article also involves implications for further research and one of the ideas is there is a need of developing open-source learning environment that can be used in typical courses to force Inquiry. From the current article I learnt that Inquiry-Based Learning is a pedagogical approach that suppose learning to be provoked by posing questions, scenarios or problems and computer technology can enhance inquiry by providing guidance and appropriate scaffolding.

During the Webinar Marcia Linn was giving a lecture on how visualizations can engage learning in Inquiry. One of the examples can be found here –

During one of the WISE projects students of the 5 and 6 grades investigate how energy from the Sun affects global temperature and their role in global climate change. The advantages of the tool is obvious as it provides the students with a clear visualization and understanding of the complex phenomena by means of ability to stop video and finding the concepts written and observing the challenges on a chart. The tool was made by using NetLogo that is a programmable modeling environment for simulating natural and social phenomena (http://ccl.northwestern.edu/netlogo/).

From the lecture it could be concluded that using visualizations as scaffolding with providing appropriate guidelines to students can foster Inquire by making students analyze, reconsider and argument their opinion.

I found the Webinar useful for expanding my knowledge of pedagogical and technological use Inquiry learning. I see the important role of the teacher is to support students in Inquiry with providing them with guidance and appropriate feedback. In my opinion technology can  substitute the teacher in providing guidance but feedback should be given to students individually by the teacher.

Mentoring. 5th meeting. Free Web-based technology

The last 5th meeting of mentors and mentees took place on the 29th of April in Adobe Connect.

The topic of meeting was free Web-based technology, that is why we decided to arrange meeting online in order to experience teaching with use of technological tools.

The goal of the meeting was to help mentees know the use of instructional technologies and how they can be used to engage students and enhance learning outcomes; to look at different types of education technologies and ways in which educators, administrators, and students can use them in and out of the classroom. Analyzing the preset goal I would like to reflect what we managed and what we did not manage to achieve during the meeting. First of all, using technological tools in education always has its pitfalls and challenges. In spite of the fact that some of the links did not work, some of students had troubles with remembering their accounts and passwords and mentors did not have an opportunity to share the presentation via Adobe Connect I believe the meeting was a successful one as some of the useful tools such as were presented. Fatiu was a person responsible for the meeting. I would like to thank Fatiu for a good planning and providing both mentors and mentees with useful pedagogical sources and a good explanation how the tools can be used with an educational purpose.

But on the other hand the meeting could be better if there were collaboration between the mentors in its planning and implementation.  The meeting was in a form of lecture, it would be interesting to make the meeting more interactive by using activities and elaborating the assignments for mentees. Mentors are not teachers but being mentors is a good practice for us to develop a skill of using pedagogical techniques and methods that is why more serious pedagogical approach is needed.
The expected outcomes were the following: the mentees will know many available educational technology tools and will be able to used this different types or free web-based tools in any given situation. I think we managed to reach the expected results, but the goals and outcomes were initially overvalued as to make students master educational tools can not been realized during one session.

Mentoring. 4th meeting. Visiting Business Kitchen

The 4th meeting on the mentoring course was organised in a different way. The main idea of the meeting was to bring the light to the practical implementation of expertise got in the LET studies. In order to achieve this goal both LET groups visited Oulu Business Kitchen, that is a space to create ideas together, collaborate and cooperate in order to embody one’s dream. Mia Kemppaala and Johanna Bluemink gave a presentation telling about the possibilities that Business Kitchen provides to its visitors and the current organisations and activities taking place there. Our LET group has already been there several times as the last year we had the similar presentation and our mentors also organised some interesting activities for us with a purpose to celebrate the New Year and reveal our collaborative and cooperative skills- https://www.facebook.com/groups/BusinessKitchenCommunity/?fref=ts .

I find the visit to Business Kitchen useful for both mentors and mentees. From the mentees’ perspective it’s a good example of the practical implementation how knowledge and skills gained in the International Master’s Programme in Learning, Education and Technology can be applied while mentors who are going to graduate this year and start thinking about there future plans had an opportunity to reconsider their expertise and make visible connections between learning and working life. As a mentor I was glad to have such an opportunity to attend the lecture and accompany the mentees and I hope they enjoyed the meeting as I did.

Then I am going to draw attention to the positive points of the meeting and information that was both interesting and useful for me as an educator or a teacher. First of all, the following organisations were introduced to us:

In Demola, university students develop product and service demo concepts together with companies and create new solutions to real-life problems. Demola provides an inspiring atmosphere of creative co-creation and new learning opportunities for students and professionals of different universities and organisations. Demola Oulu is a part of international Demola Network.

Some of LET students took part in Demola Projects. As for me, unfortunately I did not have such an opportunity because of the lack of time and my objective was to draw all my efforts to the University programme in order to succeed in that first. But I truly see a huge amount of benefits in joining Demola projects. And I hope I will have such an opportunity after graduation from the University of Oulu.

Our mission is to encourage students to entrepreneurship and to motivate them to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams.

We aim to connect like minded students from different fields of study and support creativity in academic environment. We hope to be the most important link between students and local enterprises.

To do this we organize events, competitions and bring the entrepreneurs to students.

Through all this we hope to increase the amount of student-driven start-ups in the Oulu region.

  • Business blender

Business blender provides all the necessary information for people who are interested in starting their business, listening to their bright ideas, answering questions, finding other people who are interested in the same field and giving a good opportunity to believe in one’s effort and start up.

May be one day I will be interested in starting my own business and in this case I will know what should be the first step and where I can get some guidance 🙂

As my Master’s Thesis deals with game theory and Game-Based Learning I would like to join Game lab one day to gain more knowledge in this field and share my ideas and vision of collaborative serious game from the pedagogical perspective.

is an amazing event holding by Business Kitchen the core idea of which is to tell about your expertise and project ideas until you freeze. First of all, I like the event from the pedagogical point as person need to learn how to define the core elements from thoughts and ideas and ability to explain that clear and fast. But it was also interested, that Mia told us about the activity from its very starting or in other words from elaborating the idea to its implementation taking account to the technical issues of its organisation to emotional challenges.

The next part of the presentation was about on how to choose your expertise, determining your future plans and do not forget to remember about  other opportunities. To better demonstrate the information given the Pinterest as a technological tool was used. The presentation helped me to gather all my future ideas together and believe in myself so that I feel that I possess strong theoretical background. I also liked the idea the business is not about cold money and men but something interesting and alive if you know how to do it and apply all your heart.

3rd mentoring meeting

The third meeting of mentors and mentees has seemed the most successful one. The reasons refer to different issues. First of all, we as mentors have gained more practice and experience in arranging and implementing such kind of meetings. Secondly, this time the previous mistakes were taken into account and were eliminated. The planning phase has had several steps: first the main ideas were created by Liping- the mentor who was responsible for this meeting, after that the mentors had skype meeting to discuss these ideas and develop the plan of implementation. After creating a presentation for mentees on the current topic “how to effectively plan and accomplish a Master’s thesis”, the bright suggestion of elaborating learning activity was accepted, that made mentors to meet face-to-face and do a great amount of work. Unfortunately I did not have an opportunity to participate in this part of planning phase, but I was satisfied with the end result. I would like to thank other mentors for their effort to be helpful for mentees and each other.

3rd meeting. Thesis

Topic: how to effectively plan and accomplish a Master’s thesis

Goals:

  • assist mentees to understand and know well the whole working process of Master’s thesis;

  • eliminate confusions and questions of mentees

  • keep up the confidence to implement and achieve the Master’s thesis.

Implementation:

  • mentors introduce mentees with the meeting plan

  • mentors present their working procedure of Master’s thesis -10 mins for each

  • mentees ask some questions that they are interested in or want to know – 10 min

  • mentors provide the answers and suggestions on the basis of the experience -20 min

  • mentees present their ideas and plans, mentors provide comments -15 min

  • case studies -15 min

  • mention the activity in next mentoring process -5 min

Outcomes:

mentees are clear about how to work for the Master’s thesis, especially planning and carrying out data collection and data analysis. In addition, they can design research process on the basis of  their own situation.

Now I would like to mention my impression of the meeting implementation:

1. mentors acted according to the plan;

2. mentors regulated the mood and atmosphere in the classroom;

3. mentors managed to make the meeting interesting and helpful;

4. the meeting was useful both for mentors and mentees;

5. mentors started to behave more confident in their words and actions;

6. learning activity was chosen and implemented successfully;

7. mentors discussed the way the meeting went;

8. it was interesting to participate even online as me

Here are some points that are needed to be taken into account as we are going to succeed as mentors:

1. We should control and regulate the participation on the meetings, so that the students who miss the meeting need to do some extra task;

2. We need to read each other’s blog posts (mentors’ and mentees’) and give a feedback;

3. We need to have more face-to-face mentoring meetings;

4. We should be more creative and search for new methods and activities for our meetings;

Expert profile IV

Being a second year student of the International Master’s Programme of Learning, Education and Technology in the University of Oulu (Finland) I have started to summarize the knowledge and skills I managed to get during the last years of studying. Previously I have spent a lot of time on learning a subject without any connection with the working area where this knowledge can be applied. Even if I had an opportunity to consolidate my knowledge in practice, I have never summed up my expertise to define my learning degree. Now I understand that mastering learning assumes not only life-long learning and applying a lot of effort but the ability to reflect what you have learned and make connections between the learning areas and concepts, and define how this knowledge can be used in one’s future life.

Being interested in becoming an expert of learning, I decided to make the list of my expertise and define the main ones that are:

  • Theory and methodology of teaching foreign languages and cultures

I have already had a linguistic and pedagogical background as I have graduated from Moscow State Regional University as a specialist of linguistics and theory and methodology of teaching foreign languages and cultures where I was taught all aspects of pedagogy and methodology: solving of didactic problems, planning and the construction of the lesson, ability to evaluate, teaching of reading, writing, speaking, grammar and listening, project-based and distant learning. The main purpose in our University was to develop communication skills in language and cultural competence. Moreover I had a lot of experience in the area of education by means of teaching the English language to children, making a lesson plan, developing training programs and using interactive games.

  • Intercultural communication

Intercultural communication was one of the major subjects in Moscow University, where we were taught the cultural differences and cultural competence. I also have international experience, as the International Center sent me to Germany several times, where I studied the German language and the culture of Germany. As the LET group consists of students from different countries and cultures, I have got more international experience and consolidated my cultural and communicational competences.

  • Learning and Education

The Master’s Degree Programme in Learning, Education and Technology (LET) educates experts in learning. The core of the education consists of three theoretical issues: self-regulated learning, collaborative learning, and the learning of expertise.

  • Educational use of ICT

As the LET Programme deals with a lot of educational technologies after completed Technology enhanced learning and ICT Workshop courses I have a good technological background on how to use technological tools in learning and education.

  • Student tutoring

I have participated in the tutor training offered by University of Oulu and tutored new International Master’s Degree students in the Masters’ Degree Programme Learning, Education and Technology during autumn term 2013. The purpose of tutoring is to provide information and support for new students about study environments and student life.

  • Academic writing

The University of Oulu aims to develop students’ academic writing skills, so that I possess a lot of theory on how to write academic texts. Moreover I have a good experience in writing academic articles working both individually and collaboratively and writing Master’s thesis.

From my experience of studying at the University of Oulu I have gained a lot of theoretical and practical knowledge, consolidating my expertise and mastering new ones that helps me to deeper understand and practice the following issues:

  • Learning of expertise, particularly adaptive expertise

     High-level learning processes can take place only if the person possesses self-regulation and metacognitive skills. The learner should be able to adopt the complex theory and apply this knowledge in practice to become the master of his or her expertise. An expert is a person with extensive knowledge or ability based on research, experience, or occupation and in a particular area of study. Expert has intense experience through practice and education in a particular field. Experts of learning continually attempt to refine their skills and attitudes toward learning: skills and attitudes that include practicing, self-monitoring, and finding ways to avoid mistakes and move to the next level. Effective learners use existing resources, seek help from others, experiment with their environments, and apply new ideas to see if they help them to achieve progress in this field.

  • Knowledge construction; both domain-specific and expert knowledge

     I understand knowledge construction as an active process of structuring separate knowledge into complete clusters. It reminds me a theory of the planet Earth’s genesis that assumes that the Earth appears by means of stardust that was attracted by a strong gravitation. In our case, the separate knowledge is stardust and if a person can manage to combine the separate knowledge together or construct it, he or she is going to possess expert knowledge that forms knowledge construction. The gravitation is associated with such factors as possessing strong motivation, metacognitive and self-regulation skills. Knowledge construction is the core element of constructivism theory that emphasizes the importance of the knowledge, beliefs, and skills an individual brings to learning experience. It represents the construction of new understanding as a combination of prior learning, new information and ability to learn.

A good chance to check how I managed to develop knowledge construction skills is to ponder the process of writing my Master’s Thesis. Have been read a huge amount of theoretical framework I started to make connections between the theoretical issues, assimilate new ideas with the prior knowledge, organize and reorganize ideas until I got a structure of my thesis work.  Master’s thesis writing is a good opportunity to learn how knowledge can be constructed.

Being a tool for reflecting and monitoring learning path in the LET studies, writing expert profile taught me to evaluate my abilities in terms of the real world, as well as support the understanding of my expertise and looking for the ways of its improvement.

  • Problem-solving

Problem-based learning (PBL) is a student-centered pedagogy in which students learn about a subject through the experience of problem solving. Working in groups, students identify what they have already known, what kind of knowledge they need to know, and how and where to access new information that may lead to solving of the problem. Problem solving is a core element in learning and education as in learning students meet a wide range of challenges and choices needed to be made. The most brilliant example where I have experienced problem was CSCL (Computer-Supported Collaborative learning). The course involves two phases:

  1. Solo phase

Working individually we had to master a huge amount of learning materials on CSCL covering such topics as motivation and emotions in CSCL, scripting CSCL and metacognition and problem solving in CSCL. The assignment given to us was to write manuscripts on these topics and chose one of the topics for the collaboration phase.

  1. Collaborative phase

     Being interested in “Metacognition and problem-solving skills”, I managed to learn a lot of theoretical framework on this topic. Working in a group of three students we had to write an academic article, the purpose of which was to learn to collaborate and to learn academic writing. Both skills were challenging that is why I not only applied my knowledge of problem-solving but consolidated it in practice.

  • Collaboration

     I possess the basic knowledge of collaborative learning and know the main aspects how to achieve good collaboration. The research proves collaborative learning is more effective in achieving high learning results than individuals working alone (Järvelä, Hurme & Järvenoja, 2011). In spite of the fact that collaborative learning has become an important instructional intervention that is expected to lead to positive results, to achieve successful collaboration is still a big challenge. In order to be successful, learners must participate in the construction of joint cognitive products that require shared understanding. Collaboration is seen as a challenging process that requires not only responsibility and creativity but cognitive, metacognitive, motivational and socio-emotional skills. As the core element of collaboration is getting shared understanding that could be reached by means of active and focused social interactions, it requires socially shared cognition and metacognition. As we see, collaboration itself cannot be neither efficient or inefficient. According to Dillenbourg and Baker (1995) collaboration works under some conditions: the composition of group, the features of the task, the context of collaboration and the medium available for communication. Besides the essential requirements to the task the role of the difficulty level should be underlined. Collaboration never takes place when all of the group members know how to solve a problem themselves. To provoke active interactions task should make students not only use their own knowledge and skills but identify a problem and chose a right strategy how to solve it working together with the whole group. Research provides the evidence that collaborative learning is more effective in more complex learning environments (Dillenbourg, Järvelä & Fisher, 2009). Speaking about collaborative learning it is necessary to mention the role of teachers. A successful collaboration is not complete without certain planning or education. Teachers have to do more than establishing groups and telling them to study together. To provide collaborative learning and expecting students to achieve socially shared metacognition in problem-solving teachers need to take the following roles: educational, social, administrative and technical roles. In other words the main role of the teacher is to provide appropriate scaffolding paying attention to the students who face difficulties while working in a group.

  • Self-regulation

     Self-regulation is an essential process of learning that assists students in managing their thoughts, behaviors and emotions in order to successfully regulate their learning. In self-regulation students are assumed to master such learning skills as goal setting, planning and motivating strategies, regulating emotion and attention, flexibly using learning strategies, being able to self-monitor, seeking help appropriately and being able to self-evaluate (Zumbrunn & Roberts, 2011). Self-regulated students are more engaged in their learning. These learners commonly seat themselves toward the classroom, voluntarily offer answers to questions and seek out additional resources in order to deepen their knowledge. Providing students with knowledge and skills about how to self-regulate their learning helps them to self-initiate motivational, behavioral and metacognitive activities in order to control their learning (Dignath & Langfeldt, 2008). It is considered as a complex process that requires students to regulate their cognitive and metacognitive learning processes. As metacognition refers to higher order thinking which involves active control over the cognitive processes engaged in learning, therefore activities such as planning how to approach a given learning task, monitoring comprehension, and evaluating progress toward the completion of a task are metacognitive in nature (Livingston, 1997). By teaching students these skills, their learning can be improved.

2. The Programme of learning, Education and Technologies give students a good chance to practice the new knowledge and skills. By means of successful completion of the following courses I get a good experience on how the theoretical knowledge can be applied in practice:

TEL (Technology-Enhanced Learning)

Having the opportunity to design a real course we were taught the whole processes of idea development, writing pedagogical and technological scripts and developing of the whole learning formal and informal environment.

Educational projects

I was introduced to the new working area that is running educational projects. I have learnt the best ways of complying with the client’s requirements and ability to lead the project from its beginning to the very end with a little use of scaffolding given from experts. As the project topic was distance learning, I managed to fulfill my expertise in this particular field.

Student tutoring

 I managed to benefit the following experience from working as a student tutor at the University of Oulu:

  • Professional development

I have already had a linguistic and pedagogical background but I have never been working to students that is why I gained a new working experience.

  • International communication

As the group consisted of students from different countries and cultures, I got international experience and consolidated my cultural and communicational competences

  • Perfect collaboration

 Active group is the main task of each experienced student tutor. It can be reached by means of student-tutor, tutor-tutor and tutor-teacher collaboration. Being a student tutor I have applied a lot of effort to show a perfect example of collaboration and cooperation.

  • Mentoring

I have experienced myself as a mentor to the new LET students, finding the main goal to foster students’ adaptation in the International Master’s Programme of Learning, Education and Technology and to provide students with an appropriate scaffolding on how to take maximum advantage from learning by means of fostering students’ own individual style of learning, showing students how the theoretical knowledge can be adopted into practice, activating students’ thinking and providing them with a deeper understanding of mentoring process and enhancing motivation.

Now I would like to reflect what the Programme of Learning, Education and Technology has helped to change in myself. First of all it has given me a lot of support and helped to change the way of thinking. Have been learnt how to self-regulate my learning, control emotions and raise self-esteem, I have become more confident in my abilities and started to believe in myself. I have learnt to set higher goals and consider the wider range of perspectives that can be given to me. By means of collaborating with group mates and teachers I have learnt how to communicate with people of different categories not being scared to present my point of view.  Studying at the University of Oulu has given me an opportunity to work with serious, purposeful, well-read and experienced people who have shown a good example how to succeed in learning.

What makes me different compared to peers? First of all each person has his or her own learning style and has a different set of skills and preferences. People are motivated with the different goals and there can be differences in both internal and external factors. In spite of these differences, people choose methods and strategies, the model of behavior that help to enhance their learning. As for me, I have known what helps me to foster cognitive and metacognitive learning processes, how to motivate and sometimes punish myself, what life and learning models suit me and what qualities are need to continue working on. For the last two years I have made a big step forward, have developed my expertise and learnt how to apply and share my knowledge. I cannot say I have achieved more success that my peers as it is impossible to compare. But the one thing I am sure is that I have achieved huge results if to compare with the beginning of my studying at the University of Oulu.

3. My goal for the following spring terms is developing skills to become an expert of Learning, Education and Technology and graduating from the University of Oulu.

  • Behavioral goal:

To increase behavioral control for accomplishing the LET Programme requirements, regulating individual learning, performing the assignments, participating in a group work and seminars and completing Master’s Thesis. In other words I am going to be an active, hard-working student who is eager to participate in studies and fulfill learning expertise.

  • Cognitive goal:

The cognitive goal involves some issues such as improvement of problem solving skills, decision making ability, analogical reasoning and information seeking skills. I have been already working on the development of these cognitive processes for a long time, but in order to become an expert of learning I need to master these skills on the higher level.

  • Emotional goal:

To control positive attitude to learning especially to such activities as working collaboratively and writing of Master’s Thesis. I have been always interested in learning but sometimes when you face difficulties it can be difficult to regulate emotions and motivation.

Mentoring/2nd meeting

The second meeting of mentoring took place on the 16th of January. This time the group have spend the same amount of time on planning the meeting, but there were some changes in our actions:

  • The meeting of mentors was online (the group was using Skype for discussions, Google Drive for collaboration and Prezi for making the presentations);

  • Less time was spent on arranging the activities, so that more time was spent on the pedagogical content of the lesson, checking how methods and activities promote our preset goals;

  • Goals were modified to fulfill mentees’ needs and preferences;

  • The group members have made a big step forward in creating new ideas and understanding each other.

In the very beginning it was decided that there will be one mentor responsible for the one section of mentoring process, so we had to divide topics and everyone got the opportunity to embody his pedagogical and technological ideas. The topic of the second meeting was “Project work” and I was the person responsible for planning and implementing it. First I gathered all my ideas and suggested them to other mentors, after getting feedback the plan was renovated.

The first idea was to introduce the mentees with the project working area in Finland, but as we do not possess such skills, we decided to focus our pedagogy on our own practice in educational projects, not forgetting to provide the theoretical material from the reliable sources.

In order to better illustrate how the goals  were accomplished I will describe the implementation of the meeting itself.

1. The topic, goals and outcomes were presented to students.

Topic: “Working area/projects

Goals:

  • introduce students with the educational projects

  • train students how to lead projects and apply current knowledge and skills into practice

Outcomes:

Students will learn more about the project area and will be able to apply existing knowledge and skills in practice and be prepared for the real projects.

2.In order to activate students’ thinking on the current topic and to know more about their working experience, the fllowing questions were given to students:

Where did you work? Did you have some experience in a project work?

How did you manage to overcome difficulties and perform your duties?

What skills were required to succeed in your work?

How did you apply your knowledge in practice?

One of the mentees possesses a vast experience in the project area, while another one has not any experience in this field at all that is why the discussion was useful for both mentors and mentees to fulfill their knowledge.

3. The next step was to get students interested in the practical part of the LET Programme. We started with the short introduction that included our feelings and impressions on the practical courses and after that shared our project-working experience.

Both courses were presented to students:

  • TEL course

Mentors shortly described the ideas and results (pedagogy and technology), some difficulties and impressions on the course.

  • Educational projects

Mentors shown the presentations of their projects shifting from the problem and content of project to its solution, not forgetting about the emotions. The result products were also introduced to mentees: posters and videos.

4. After sharing our experience we provided some scaffold on how to lead project by means of sharing the videos on project management to students:

5. The last step was summarizing and conclusions. The chain of steps was given to students, mentors and mentees had to discuss and fulfill the following points:

  • Keeping in touch with the client

  • Working collaboratively

  • Providing solutions

  • Result performance

From the conclusions part it was seen that mentors managed to reach the expected results and accomplish their goals. I really hope the mentees have the same opinion.

From my side, that was an interesting experience to be as both the mentor and listener at the same time as I had to participate online during the meeting. When you seat in the classroom you become the part of the whole process and you cannot notice some important issues. But when you have the opportunity to watch the processes from outside, you can make good conclusions about mistakes and ways of improvement.

Here are some points for our group that on my opinion should be taken into account:

  1. In spite of the fact that mentors were showing more useful pieces of advice and sharing their practical experience, presentation and argumentation of ideas make an impression that mentors are still not completely confident in their actions and ideas. As we have a good and proved plan of the meetings, we have discussed all the ideas and got the shared understanding of the learning materials and moreover this is our chance to experience ourselves as mentors which role is quite similar to the teacher we need to keep confident and get used to the mentor position. We should give a good example to the mentees.

  2. The next point is acting according to the plan. Every educator knows the situation that in spite of the fact that you have had a certain plan of learning activities and methods to use, when you come to the classroom there are so many different factors that make the teacher change his plan and improvise on educational purposes but goals stay the same and the teacher should always try to proceed according to the plan, preset goals and expected outcomes. Our mentoring group has managed to cope with a lot of circumstances and change plan a bit, but that is important to remember that each activity has had its own purpose to comply with.

  3. The same problem is time management. I truly believe that we should work more on the plan first and do not make big changes in the sequence of learning activities and the time spent on them during the meeting with mentees.

  4. Mentor-mentee collaboration. We also need to work out our plans and activities in detail so that we can achieve mentor-mentee collaboration on the higher level. For example if the purpose of the activity was to make mentors and mentees elaborate the solutions together there should not be such a situation that only mentors suggest their ideas. To achieve better collaboration on my opinion we need to think not only the goal of the activity but discuss the better ways of its implementation and choose strategies to use; act according to the plan not forgetting about taking into account the inеrnal and external factors; show a good example of collaboration to students and promote their thinking and argumentation by means of asking questions and suggesting the ideas.

  5. I like the way we collaborate and the timetable of meetings for mentors seem reasonable and satisfied. However I would like to come up with the idea that mentors need to have some extra time spent on discussing the impression on the conducted meeting with mentees: to share the impressions and thoughts, identify the pros and cons, what have been managed and what should be taken into account the next time. We need to get positive and critical feedback not only from mentees but from the mentors also. Reading each others blogpost reflections would be useful to benefit from the mentoring!

Mentoring course/1st meeting

Hello! Here is my reflection on the second part of the mentoring course. The structure of the course includes two phases when students have the opportunity  to be mentees first and when they are skillful enough the next phase is to experience themselves as mentors.

Our mentors have shown a good example to us what the meaning of mentoring is, what kind of help can be provided and what atmosphere should be created to achieve the learning goals. Being a mentee I have taken into account  a lot of factors that are essential to follow. Now I have a good chance to implement my ideas into practice and to learn how different teaching approaches can be used.

Each mentor of our group represents his own cultural and educational background:

We have spend a lot of hours with our mentoring group to define the main goal of the mentoring process, planning the meetings and creating interesting ideas what we can share with the mentees.

The main goal of mentoring is to foster students’ adaptation in the International Master’s Programme of Learning, Education and Technology and to provide students with an appropriate scaffolding on how to take maximum advantage from the programme even if it is not fully up to one’s expectations.

Toward this goal the following subgoals were set:

  • to foster students’ own individual style of learning and blend it into the program

  • to show students how the theoretical knowledge can be adopted into practice by means of providing practical examples

  • to activate students’ thinking by means of using problem-solving activities

  • to provide students’ with a deeper understanding of mentoring process

  • to enhance students’ motivation by means of providing a strong reasoning how the current knowledge can be adopted and used in future

In other words, the main idea is the Master’s Programme provides a solid theoretical knowledge in learning education and technology and we as  mentors see our goal is to facilitate students’ learning development and to scaffold students to make connection between theory and practice to become masters of their expertise. Our mentoring approach is represented below:

In the end of the mentoring course the following outcomes are expected to be reached by students:

  • reevaluation of understanding of the programme content

  • adaptation the complex theory and ability to apply the knowledge and skills in practice

  • mastering of using existing educational technological tools

  • formation of a clear vision of writing the Master’s Thesis and conducting the research

The main topic of the first meeting was “Introductions. Global and innovative educations”.

First we had a short introduction with the whole group and teachers. The students were presented a nice story about mentoring made by mentors. The goal of this method was to create a warm and friendly atmosphere and to introduce the students with a new learning concept. The groups were given a task to create a group name and share that in the end of the meeting.

Then we started an individual session with the introducing ourselves focusing more on the expertise and field of interests. The half of the meeting was in a form of introduction, where we were presenting our vision of mentoring, the mentoring plan, goals and outcomes of the mentoring course. To make the information visible to students we had created a presentation with the most important information. To make students better understand the requirements of the mentoring process it was considered from the following perspectives:

  1. history of mentoring;

  2. mentoring nowadays;

  3. what is mentoring for us.

A lot of attention was given to the last point of view, as we wanted the students to know what we expect from them and what they can expect from us that is a key point in breaking the frames down and becoming a strong team that is ready to collaborate and get a shared understanding. The content of meetings was also discussed with students in order to determine the necessity of the planned activities and the mentees were given an opportunity to suggest their ideas and make changes in the mentoring plan.

During the next half of the session one of the mentors Polina were given a short lecture on the following topic “Global and innovative education”.

 After that mentors and mentees were discussing the advantages and challenges of the Master’s Programme in Learning, Education and Technology, where mentees were sharing their expectations toward the program and mentors were sharing their experience and piece of advice how to take benefit from the programme and facilitate the development of expertise.

The following written assignment was given to students: to reflect their vision and expectation of the LET programme and provide the suggestions how the programme can be improved.

In the end of the meeting we had a 15 minutes wrap-up with the whole group and teachers, where the mentors and mentees presented their group names and their impressions of the first meeting.

The name of our group is “Happy grumpies”. The idea is that learning is a challenging process that requires to overcome some inner emotional and behavioral factors. To learn how to succeed in the learning process, the student needs to master self-regulation skills that assumes students to regulate their attitude to learning and to work out the individual learning style. Our approach is to stop being “grumpy” and learn how to benefit from your learning environment. We hoped we managed to achieve the preset goals and mentees could reevaluate their understanding of the program, directing themselves to active coping with challenges.

Meta-cognition and problem-solving  in CSCL

The topic of the manuscript is Metacognition and Problem-Solving in Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL). The aim of the task is to assimilate the new learning material and to elaborate the new vision and understanding of the topic. The article we have to read represents a study that is focused on socially shared metacognition, its processes and impact on the individual learning.

The research proves collaborative learning is more effective in achieving high learning results than individuals working alone. In spite of the fact that collaborative learning has become an important instructional intervention that is expected to lead to positive results, to achieve successful collaboration is still a big challenge.

Collaborative learning activities can include a huge range of cognitive and metacognitive activities, such as collaborative thinking, sharing ideas and solving problems together. CSCL has problem-solving as the core element of its interaction design. Problem-based learning (PBL) is a student-centered pedagogy in which students learn about a subject through the experience of problem solving. Working in groups, students identify what they have already known, what kind of knowledge they need to know, and how and where to access new information that may lead to solving of the problem.

Besides the essential requirements to the task the role of the difficulty level should be underlined. Collaboration never takes place when all of the group members know how to solve a problem themselves. To provoke active interactions task should make students not only use their own knowledge and skills but identify a problem and chose a right strategy how to solve it working together with the whole group. Research provides the evidence that collaborative learning is more effective in more complex learning environments.  

 The perception of difficulty usually depends on students background knowledge and ability how to use this knowledge, how to find new information, how to control motivation and emotions or in other words it depends on person’s self-regulation skills.

 While self-regulated learning requires students to regulate the cognitive and metacognitive processes in their learning, activation of both is not enough for successful collaborative learning. As the core element of collaboration is getting shared understanding that could be reached by means of active and focused social interactions, it requires socially shared cognition and metacognition.

While cognition include mental processes as thinking and memorizing, metacognition means “thinking about thinking”, “cognition about cognition” and it takes control over cognitive learning processes. Socially shared metacognition is the process of sharing and regulation of metacognition within a group that usually includes sharing of ideas and procedures about how to solve a problem and the discussions about which alternative to follow.

Much research has been conducted to code and analyze students’ interaction and participation using written messages during CSCL that has helped to understand the processes and outcomes of collaborative learning in computer-mediated environment. The messages of students were divided into a lot of categories but all of them can mainly refer to the following three groups:

  1.  social messages are messages or comments that are not related to the problem (agreement, disagreement without visible argumentation)
  2.  cognitive messages are messages related to problem-solving without any expectations.
  3.  metacognitive regulation messages are messages that are related to the ongoing discussion and usually provide reasoning and argumentation to motivate other members of the group to solve a problem.

While social and cognitive interactions usually can take place matter-of-course, metacognitive interaction can not always occur when students solve the problem together. Metacognition should be regulated on both levels: individual and group.

The research proves the fact feeling of difficulty decreases if metacognitive regulation is distributed among the group and metacognition becomes socially shared. Moreover, socially shared metacognition is a key factor for successful group problem-solving. The results of the research seem quite obvious, but implementation of the research and participants’ behavior during collaboration are interesting to learn about.

In CSCL technology gives students the opportunity of exchanging ideas and information, collaborative learning, discovering alternatives in learning and developing their own learning styles but it also gives the opportunity for teachers to assess students knowledge and skills. From the research perspective, technology makes it possible to identify the core processes of collaboration in computer-supported environments and its impact on students individual progress. Technology helps educators to conduct difficult but pedagogically effective learning activities in more comfortable and modern learning environments.

As metacognition is a difficult and uncertain psychological process, to achieve socially shared metacognition and moreover to make it visible without mastering self-regulative, collaborative and problem-solving skills, without getting the appropriate guidance,regulation of motivation and constant control is some kind of utopia.

Speaking about collaborative learning in interactive environments it is necessary to mention the role of teachers in collaborative learning. A successful collaboration is not complete without certain planning or education. Teachers have to do more than establishing groups and telling them to study together. To provide collaborative learning and expecting students to achieve socially shared metacognition in problem-solving teachers need to take the following roles: educational, social, administrative and technical roles.
